Every man must seek after God for himself. Every woman must seek after God for herself.

1 Chronicles 1:4 says “Noah, Shem, Ham and Japheth”. What a simple but powerful text filled with so many lessons. Three of these men listed were the sons of Noah and they had several things in common. Some of these are:

1. They were related.

2. They had all seen the results of sin – people perishing in a flood.

3. They all experienced the mercies of God when they were saved from that flood.

4. They all obtained a brand new start, a brand new beginning when they stepped out of the ark. A beginning that was to be used to the glorification of God.

5. They saw the righteousness of their father because of his obedience to God as he preached for many years a message of repentance. Genesis 6:3.

One would have thought that all this would have had a major impression on all three of Noah’s sons but if we go back to Genesis chapter 9 we see this was not the case. All these similarities that they shared had an impact for good and a pursuit after righteousness for only two of Noah’s sons Japheth and Shem but for Ham the seeds of sin from the generation he had just left behind were still very much alive in his heart – Genesis 9:22-23 ->[22] Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.

[23]And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.

The first text above Genesis 9 verse 22 says that Ham was the father of Canaan. We all know about Canaan it was the land that the Israelites were promised after they fled Egypt. It is also the land flowing with milk and honey. But the most important thing is that it was a land overrun by immorality and worship of idols. That is why God put them up for destruction and promised to give their land to the Israelites. This curse of evil upon the Canaanites was because of Ham’s sin – Genesis 9:24-25 ->[24]And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.

[25]And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

Shem and Japheth, however, were blessed – Genesis 9:26-27 ->[26]And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

[27]God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

God said:

Genesis 6:8-9 ->[8]But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

[9]These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

The Bible spoke of Noah as being righteous in his generation despite all the unrighteousness that was around him. Genesis 6:5-7 ->[5]And GOD saw that the wikedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

[6]And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

[7]And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

However, all Noah’s righteousness could not be given to Ham. Ham had to develop a relationship with God for himself – only by doing this could his heart be changed from unrighteousness to righteousness. No man’s righteousness will do for another. No woman’s righteousness will do for another. That is why in these end times our only hope is through repentance and a searching and longing after God for ourselves. Only God’s righteousness – the covering of our sins and guilt by Jesus’ blood and Jesus’ righteousness is sufficient to make us righteous. This is the only way any of us will be able to stand for truth and righteousness in these last days and have any hope to make it into the heavenly Canaan when Jesus comes back to call HIS own. Let 2 chronicles 7:14 be put into practice in these end times.

2 Chronicles 7:14 ->

[14]If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
