Judges 1:2

Judges 1:2 tells of God’s response to the Israelites’ question after the death of Joshua – “Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?” God’s response in verse two says
And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

This reminds me of a story in Luke 10:1-20:
1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place, whither He Himself would come.

2 Therefore said He unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.

4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.

5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.

6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.

7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.

8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:

9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,

11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.

13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.

16 He that heareth you heareth Me; and he that despiseth you despiseth Me; and he that despiseth Me despiseth Him that sent Me.

17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.

18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

God calls us all to go and do His work while there is spiritual daylight before the spititual night comes. Work while there is freedom to do His work before the spiritual night of persecution from the world comes to try and stop you or make it more difficult to do His work.

This story also reminds me of myself. How often have I made an excuse to avoid going when God has sent me to do His work. Refusal to do His will has no excuse. His work is urgent for time is running out and souls are dying going to a Christless grave because of our delay or refusal to go when we are sent.

This story also reminds me of the world’s present pandemic situation. Sudden destruction, sudden change in normal circumstances, sudden death. Some of these souls who have died in a lost state going to a Christless grave could it be that they didn’t have the chance to make a decision for eternal life because of my delay or your delay in going where we are sent with the Good News of Salvation.

For all of us a type of spiritual night has already come in the form of Covid-19. This disease has prevented us from meeting face to face freely in most instances to give a bible study, an encouragement, a warning, an admonition. But the good news is that its not total spiritual darkness yet for there are still ways to connect with others to help them on the pathway of life eternal. For example blogging, social media etc.

Let us all be like the israelites in Judges chapter 1 willing to go where He sends us, willing to do His work. Let us not hear Him saying like in Luke 10:2
“Therefore said He unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: ……”

As I am writing this post my little girl starts to sing: “If you love Him why not serve Him. If you love Him why not serve Him? Soldiers of the cross.” She is too small to know what I am writing. Is that not the Holy Spirit? If you are a soldier of the cross today do what soldiers do – Go where they are sent and fight the battles they are sent to fight. My little girl doesn’t stop there she asks “Why hasn’t God come back?” I answered because we are not doing His work.” The Bible says in Matthew 24:14 KJV: ” And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” Let none of us today when weighed in the balances be found wanting. Let us keep the words of the following song before us:

1

Work, for the night is coming,
Work through the morning hours;
Work while the dew is sparkling,
Work ’mid springing flowers;
Work when the day grows brighter,
Work in the glowing sun;
Work, for the night is coming,
When man’s work is done.

2

Work, for the night is coming,
Work through the sunny noon;
Fill brightest hours with labor,
Rest comes sure and soon.
Give every flying minute,
Something to keep in store;
Work, for the night is coming,
When man works no more.

3

Work, for the night is coming,
Under the sunset skies;
While their bright tints are glowing,
Work, for daylight flies.
Work till the last beam fadeth,
Fadeth to shine no more;
Work, while the night is darkening,
When man’s work is o’er.

God bless you!
