When Charles H. Gabriel (1856-1932) sat down or stood up to write this song – I wonder what was really going through his mind. According to wikipedia.org website: Charles H. Gabriel while bicycle riding with a Chicago publisher [probably E. O. Excell], for whom he was at the time preparing manuscript, he said to his friend: “I’ve got a song that is going to live!” He then gave the title of, and made brief quotations from, “O that will be glory.” He was paid $10. for the song.

Interestingly enough I am of the same opinion that this song “is going to live” every time I read the words and sing it – it keeps growing and revealing new things.

Giving more background on the birth of “O that will be glory,” this quote from wikipedia.org states that: Charles M. Alexander had a great deal to do with popularizing the song, even though his first impression of the song was negative. He wrote that when he first saw it in publication, he said to himself, “That man has wasted a page, for I do not believe that song will be sung much,” but several months later he heard it being sung at a Sunday school convention, and was impressed by the enthusiasm with which the crowd sang it.

This just goes to show us that different people will always have different opinions and different first impresssions of our work, however, the truth and power of our inventions and compositions will live and blossom with time and in this case right through eternity.

Here are the words and lyrics:

1. When all my labors and trials are o’er,
And I am safe on that beautiful shore,
Just to be near the dear Lord I adore
Will thro’ the ages be glory for me.

Chorus:

O that will be glory for me
Glory for me,
Glory for me;
When by His grace I shall look on His face,
That will be glory,
Be glory for me.

2. When by the gift of His infinite grace,
I am accorded in heaven a place,
Just to be there and to look on His face,
Will thro’ the ages be glory for me.

3. Friends will be there I have loved long ago;
Joy like a river around me will flow;
Yet, just a smile from my Savior, I know,
Will thro’ the ages be glory for me.

Taking this song to another dimension I have realised that there is tremendous glory that will be yours too if you make it your primary goal to seek the Kingdom of God first!

Why do I say this – I say this because if I were to replace the “I am” with “you are” and the “my” with “your” and the “I” with “you” and the “me with “you” then:

1. When all your labors and trials are o’er,

And you are safe on that beautiful shore,

Just to be near the dear Lord you adore

Will thro’ the ages be glory for you.

Chorus:

O that will be glory for you

Glory for you,

Glory for you;

When by His grace you shall look on His face,

That will be glory,

Be glory for you.

2. When by the gift of His infinite grace,

You are accorded in heaven a place,

Just to be there and to look on His face,

Will thro’ the ages be glory for you.

3. Friends will be there you have loved long ago;

Joy like a river around you will flow;

Yet, just a smile from your Savior, you know,

Will thro’ the ages be glory for you.

The power and encouragement packed in this song is worth much more than $10 and the lyrics that Charles M. Alexander once thought was a wasted page have proved to be lyrics that speak life and truth – the truth is that life in Jesus Christ will have rewards in the future that are incomparable to anything here on earth.

The truth is that:

17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
– 2 Corinthians 4;17-18

The truth is that:

34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

35 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
– Hebrews 11:34-40

The truth is that:

“Death itself shall die!”

May God bless you today in an unmistakable way as you choose to be answer His call and experience His glory!
