Any friend who encourages us to do wrong, to lie, to steal, to murder, to cheat… that friend is no friend at all. Any family member who is happy to see us become alcoholics, child abusers, porn addicts, drug dealers… that family member is no family at all. No matter how close or how seemingly unbreakable the chain of friendship or the bond of family allegiance – once a friendship commitment or family commitment starts to lead us into places where we become morally weaker or cause us to develop habits that discourage our souls…that particular commitment needs to be abandoned. The real question is…does being locked up in prison because I followed some respected family member or “inseparable” friend worth it?
Is taking our time, our talents, our treasure (money & possessions) and our temple (mind & body) and using them for worthless endeavors and criminal activity a blessing to our minds, souls and our bodies? Can we truly be happy when we hurt others and see the results of our indiscretions and selfishness? When persons who claim to love us do not point us in the direction where we can build our faith, find true peace and be filled with Jesus’ love then we have come to crossroad in life where a crucial decision is necessary, imminent and urgent. The cords of influence that tug us to obey friends and family who influence us to do wrong should be examined and replaced with an honest heart-to-heart talk where we can now influence our misled friends and family to choose to do good.
But suppose my honest heart-to-heart talk failed? Then it is now time to spend time in earnest prayer: [1.] Praying for our friend or family member to abandon their negative direction, and [2.] Praying to God for His direction and guidance as to how we should relate to that particular friend or family member that is seeking to lead us astray. Jesus puts our choice of allegiance in graphic language, Jesus says:
“ If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.” – Luke 14:26-27.
The Juicy Details are that Embracing Jesus Christ , His love and an eternity with Him in heaven is infinitely better than accompanying friends and family that want us to go to roast in hell with them!
