Romans 6:23 says: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The other day the whole magnitude of this text came alive to me in a whole new meaning. I had just gotten the news that a friend’s mother had died and as I sat contemplating this whole reality of death that every living thing must face the thought came to me —-every time I see death is one more reason to hate satan and to see him for the coward he is.

Stop and think about it for a moment —- If there was never no sin there would never be any death! Then keep on thinking —— who did sin originate from? satan! Because of this cowardly being our whole planet has been plunged into being paid death for our acts of sin. Then stop and think about it for a moment again —- If at the end of every month each employer paid their employees death as their wages for their acts of service to the company what would happen? Soon everyone on planet earth would be dead. This is exactly what satan has caused to happen to each and everyone of us. The cancer of sin has been spreading like wildfire since he entertained that first evil thought and as a consequence death widespread heart-wrenching death has been the result or should i say the pay off for it. Each one of us is now subject to death. God never intended it to be this way. In the garden of Eden He explicitly warned Adam and Eve that the result of sin would be death. Genesis 2:17 ” But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Our foreparents still choose death over life although they were warned. We have not even started to comprehend how serious this death thing is. It takes shape in so many forms not only physical death but other forms such as:

1. When a spouse cheats the result of that sin is death of the relationship if not divorce a rift or distrust in the relationship.

2. When a robber robs a bank the result is death of his freedom if he gets locked up.

3. If a person holds on to a life of repeatedly sinning without taking God’s free gift of salvation then that person will eventually experience death of conscience.

4. When friends gossip and hurt one another this leads to death of friendship, death of harmony and death of unity

And there are so many more examples. All these four I mentioned along with other examples I haven’t mentioned can then lead to Stress which is a big contributor to illnesses such as high blood pressure and cancer which can then lead to physical death. Oh how complicated and messed up our world has become because of the ego and pride of one former angel. Every time we see the death of someone or an animal or a plant is a fresh reminder of how nasty sin is, it’s consequence and how much we need to hate and abhor it.

However it also gives us another reminder, a wonderful promise that is found in our opening text —Romans 6:23 says: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. The word ‘but’ in that text puts a whole other twist on this gloomy topic of death. You see “but” is a conjunction and according to the dictionary a conjunction is the action or an instance of two or more events or things occurring at the same point in time or space. This makes me want to shout and break out in a dance like King David did because you see two or more events are happening in Romans at the exact same time. While death occurs everyday and reminds us that the wages of sin is death at the exact same time God has His beautiful hands open reminding us that His gift to us is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. You see our heavenly Father came and paid the ultimate wage for our sin — death on Calvary’s cross so that we can have can have a second chance at life even if we die this temporary death down here He is willing to give us eternal life rather than eternal death. That’s why each of us, having made that decision to receive God’s free gift can scream these two excerpts of dynamic power to the top of our voices each and everyday:

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 King James Version (KJV)

16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

1 Corinthians 15:55 King James Version (KJV)

55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
