The Extent Of The Curse

The Bible indicates that from the time men fell there has been a curse upon the earth and its inhabitants. Many texts in the bible give reference to this curse. Some of the texts concerning the curse are:

Genesis 3:14 KJV
And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

Genesis 3:17 KJV
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

Genesis 5:29 KJV
And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed.

The curse pronounced upon humans and the earth when Adam and Eve fell has had tremendous adverse effects. The results of the curse can be seen everywhere. From broken families to disappearing wildlife going extinct the curse has touched everything. The other day I was listening to a gospel song on YouTube that came with pictures that you can watch as the song played and they showed pictures that showed God’s creative power such as the color of the leaves falling off the trees during fall and the new flowers blooming during spring. As I watched it dawned on me the magnitude of God’s love for us. Although I knew that the leaves in all their multitude of colors falling off the trees is a result of them basically dying as spring and summer fades to fall and winter, never before had it dawned on me with such intensity that even the trees have been touched by the curse. God said the wages of sin is death – Romans 6:23 KJV, and this thing called sin is such a contagious disease that everything in its path dies. Those leaves falling and dying are a direct result of men’s sin and the curse that came because of it. Even the trees must now face death. What a revelation that hit me like a ton of bricks. I had subconsciously in my mind disassociated the whole process of death with these leaves turning these beautiful colors before they fall. Now it is clear to me that it is death and it is because of the fall of mankind that has caused this to happen. However, God in His awesome love towards us still tries to make this death process not so hard for us by still putting a little beauty in the whole process by the color of the leaves. Even with us having to bear the consequences of sin God still shows us mercy.

After this hit me something else hit me and here it is. Spring is a time of renewal. A time when new life comes into these same plants and brand new plants spring to life. This is also the time the world calls easter and Christ’s resurrection from the grave is celebrated. Christ’s death and resurrection give us an opportunity at eternal life even though what we really deserve is death as a consequence of our sins. God paid the price of death in our place so that justice could be satisfied and we could have a chance at life. So just the time the world is celebrating the sacrifice of new life by the only Life-Giver God everything in nature is showing new life as well as though to re-emphasize the full meaning of God’s sacrifice that He came to give us life in abundance. God might have pronounced a curse on this earth but He never leaves us without hope to die in our utter despair. John 3:16 King James Version (KJV) says For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. He also makes us a promise that the curse shall not be forever. This promise is found at the beginning of the bible in Genesis and to the end in Revelation and one thing we can be sure of is God’s promises:

Genesis 8:21 KJV
And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

Revelation 22:3 KJV
And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

One thing we can be sure of is God’s promises.
