Silence when compared to noise is like the contrast of bitter versus sweet, hate versus love or sadness versus happiness. Just like sweet, love and happiness silence always wins over its opponent noise. There is so much beauty in silence. It not only brings peace to one’s soul but the person who finds it and engages it finds something worth far more than all the gold this world holds. Silence has many rewards. To me one of the greatest rewards is that it allows the person who practises it to become a better listener. Being a better listener is paramount in today’s world. As we listen more and talk less we actually make better decisions because our mind gets time to process all that is being thrown at us. In the presence of silence we hear God better as well and when we hear the voice of God better our decision making process becomes more clear and less rushed amidst a noisy world.
Today take some time to enter into silence with God by listening to the sound of the river or sea or just simply through prayer. Today when someone rubs your spirit the wrong way and you are tempted to speak a rash hasty word think about Proverbs 17:28 – “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise, and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding” or Proverbs 18:6-7 – “A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul or Proverbs 21:23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.”
Silence keeps our soul from trouble and allows God to fight for us and work out our problems for us. When we are still before Him and know that He is God we are in unspoken words saying Lord I know you are bigger than all my problems and I believe your promises all through the Bible are true that say You shall vindicate my cause. In Psalm 107 alone no less than four times in verse 6, 13, 19 and 28 does the psalmist repeat that when we cry unto God he delivers us from our distresses. Crying does not have to always mean opening up your mouth and bawling, it also means silently talking to God in your mind right in the presence of trouble. Silence is indeed golden, let us make it apart of our life today.
