Some statistics can be estimated by observing things that we see everyday. For example, we can estimate how many bottles of water the average person can consume each day. However, there are some statistics that we know are just educated guesses – figures that try to tell a story using Mathematics and Science, yet there is still an element of dramatic uncertainty coupled with an inability to reach back into the annals of time to gather all the necessary facts.
If we had the task of calculating the number of raindrops that have fallen over the last 3 years on earth, this would undoubtedly prove to be a huge task. Some might want to:
- Find out how many raindrops fall per minute
- Calculate how many raindrops are in an inch of rain
- Find out what is the frequency with which rain falls
- Find out why raindrops fall with more intensity in certain areas of the world
Others might decide to:
- Take a look at raindrops under a microscope
- Locate the height at which a raindrop becomes fully mature
- Calculate how many raindrops fall into the sea versus those that fall on land
And still we might find other persons who would be interested in:
- Harnessing information about the number of raindrops that might have been intercepted by evaporation, airplanes, birds, tents, kites, etc…
The gigantic task of estimating the number of raindrops that fell over the last 3 years on earth can get even bigger if someone suddenly wants to calculate all the raindrops that fell in the 21st century. Then there might be someone who would love to find out the size of the raindrops that fell in Noah’s time and compare them to those that fall today!
The power and accuracy of statistical scientific research is always challenged by its environment and the inquiring mind that might want an even bigger picture. Just as might be seen in the person of the occasional student who raises his or her hand to ask their teacher: “How can we calculate all the raindrops that ever fell on earth from the time of Noah to the 31st May 2014?” Just as challenging as our student’s question and the research needed to accurately estimate the number of raindrops that ever fell on earth, is the question that is being asked today: “How can the crisis that one man named Adam and one woman named Eve start be solved?” This question and challenge was answered in one beautiful excerpt from Paul’s writing found in Romans 5:12-21.
Using three verses from this excerpt of Paul’s writing – Romans 5:15-17 NASB we receive three gigantic truths:
15 But [c]the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
Gigantic truth 1 based on verse 15:
Although Adam’s transgression has caused us much hurt, pain, suffering and death. God’s grace and pardon that has been made through Jesus Christ is extraordinarily powerful and sufficient to give every person Freedom from sin!
16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression [d]resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification.
Gigantic truth 2 based on verse 16:
The gift of putting our lives in the care of Jesus Christ is not like the widespread hurt, pain, suffering, and death on earth today – which resulted from Adam and Eve’s transgression. Instead the gift of putting our lives in Christ’s care came from God through Christ’s death on the cross providing us with Grace that Unimaginably Exceeds our failures and gives us the immense beauty and privilege of being Free and Justified!!
17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
Gigantic truth 3 based on verse 17:
Any person who faithfully takes hold of the Grace of Jesus Christ is Justified – that person is no longer guilty of transgressions no matter how many sins they have done in the past and he or she is now a full citizen of God’s Kingdom here on earth and will reign with Him when Jesus returns!!!
To use the raindrop analogy: If the wrong things that a person has done in a lifetime were as numerous as the total number of raindrops falling over the earth for 3 years or even 70 years — the Grace of God is still Greater and still Exceeds the total number of raindrops that have fallen over the earth since rain began to fall in Noah’s day!
