Pause for a while imagine it scheming, backbiting, manipulative, jealous individuals who laugh with you infront your face but behind your back they act as your greatest predator. We have all met them some time in our lives and if we are honest with ourselves we have all played the role of that person sometime in our lives too even if it was for a moment. I have penned this character trait with the word ‘badmindedness.’

What do you do when you encounter personalities such as these? What do you do when you feel this terrible beast rising even within yourself? Is your reaction to get angry, resentful, bitter when you come under the attack of such a one? Oh we have all been there – wrongfully targeted by some soul being used by the forces of evil. In my life I have had more than one encounter with individuals that portray these characteristics and it has not been an easy thing to deal with. My natural carnal nature wants to fight back, get angry and justify myself against such a one but as I get closer to God He has shown me and is still showing me a better way to deal with such individuals.

You see character traits like these originated with the master deceiver satan. satan is constantly seeking to turn men’s hearts away from God and from God’s image into his (satan) image, into his likeness. satan knows that if he can accomplish this he would have agents on earth to carry out his hellish plans against their fellow men. He works through those who have given themselves to accept his traits of character to harass and make the lives of those around them unpleasant. Anyone of us can be a prey to him once we take our eyes off Christ and depend upon our own strength each day. This gives the devil room to come in and gain a stronghold on us to carry out his plans.

God has and is still teaching me to make a conscious effort each day to refuse to allow satan to use me. Each day God invites each of us to put on his armour to fight against the forces of evil and to come out victorious. God says in Ephesians:

Ephesians 6:11-18

King James Version (KJV)

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

You see when we come across individuals who move as though they want our down fall at any cost even if we have done them no wrong Ephesians says that we are not wrestling against a physical person. Although we might see a physical person they are being controlled at the time by satan that is why in the text above he says in verse 12:

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

When we meet these types of people in our lives we are actually fighting against the powers of darkness that is controlling them. An unseen force that is real as the computer infront of you. The bible gives the solution of how to defeat them in verse 13 – 18. It says we must take up the whole armour of God in order to stand in the evil day and having done all to stand as recommended in verse 13-17 we must then submit ourselves to prayer verse 18.

What a powerful admonition. We have a God who sincerely cares about each aspect of our lives. You see Jesus himself encountered this very force of badmindedness , maliciousness when He was on earth. There are many examples such as with the attacks from the Pharisees and Saducees upon Jesus in the new testament where they constantly tried to plot his downfall or to set him up, to scheme against him in everyway. Then there is Judas Iscariot ( Christ’s disciple) who walked with Jesus as a close friend and turned around and betrayed him for a mere piece of stupid silver. You see Jesus has walked the road we have to trod to show us how to walk it so who better to listen to than the creator of the universe. In all these situations and even more that Jesus encountered which this post would not have room to mention he resorted always to depend on God the Father for his strength and to submit himself to prayer.

If you are going through this particular situation in your life right now remember not to become bitter but to fight back through prayer. Give your situation to Jesus who sees all and knows all and who alone can manage the forces of evil that are trying to attack you. You see satan’s motive when he tries to attack you by using an agent in the form of a person is to get you to a place where you become so disgruntled and defensive and upset about the attack that you now start to unconsciously take on the same traits that person who is attacking you is displaying and without even knowing it you are now under satan’s influence too. Let me explain what I mean, here is the scenario, imagine it – someone is viciously talking behind your back or setting up things against you unjustly. They have taken on the traits of satan to be vindictive, love confusion and drama so they try to carry out the attacks their master (satan) has for you. you are now offended and wanting to justify yourself against these vicious attacks that are unjust begin to harbour traits of hate, revenge and anger which you never had before. Boom satan has accomplished his goal of passing on his character traits to you through the work of his agent. However, if when you come under these attacks instead you submit to God in prayer and carry the situation to God you have now released yourself from becoming a victim of satans devise and influence and have placed God in between you and the attacker so that it is God who is now fighting for you and there is no attacker that can fight God and win. By doing this you release yourself from emotions that can build up in you that can be hurtful and painful and destructive and you allow God to take control of you and fill you with His character and sometimes this has a direct effect on the attacker as you return good for evil they in some cases become changed by your indirect influence and you release them and yourself from the trap of satan.

This is the way God is teaching me to deal with such situations. It is not an easy lesson to learn by all means but it is a lesson that you and I must learn in order for us to be saved. Each and everyone of our battles must be fought by God not by ourselves or by other men. we must learn not to run to our co worker or friend or family member to complain or mourn about these attacks but we must learn to run to Jesus. Take the following text the next time you want to run to man for help when trouble comes:

Proverbs 3:5 New International Version (NIV)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding”

Jeremiah 17:5-9 ESV

Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 ESV

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Today I looked out my window to an awesome surprise. There before me was a beautiful rainbow a reminder of God’s promise that he will never again send a worldwide flood as in the day of Noah and the ark. What a beautiful promise and oh what loyalty, that even after many many years have passed God still remembers to send a rainbow to us after rain has come as a symbol to remind us of this promise. God is unchangeable, loyal and trustworthy. He never defaults on His promise, unlike us. So today remember what 1 Peter 5:7 says:

“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

God bless each and everyone of you.
